  • Pull window sashes from the window.
  • If the stop doesn’t move, cut them with the help of an oscillating tool from the window.

Step 2 Prepare the Opening

  • Check the window frame for damage, such as mold or rot.
  • Clean the rough opening of any dirt or debris.
  • Before installing the new window, make sure the frame is square by measuring diagonally from opposite corners with a tape measure to ensure that they are at least 1/4 inch apart.
  • If the frame isn’t square, you’ll need to remove the trim and use shims to adjust it.

Step 3 Installs the New Vinyl Window

  • After ensuring that the window fits in the opening, place a bead of caulk along the inside of the outer window stops.
  • Place the vinyl window in the center of the opening.
  • Check if the placement of the window is in the center or not with your tape measure.
  • Close and lock the window sashes.
  • Place shims underneath the window to make sure it is plumb and level in the opening.
  • The shims should hold the window in place but not be too tight.
  • Next, open the window and find the screw holes on the top and bottom.
  • Drill a pilot hole, and then drill each screw through the shims and into the frame from the inside.

Step 4 Finish and Seal

  • Check if there’s any gap between the replacement window’s frame and the existing frame.
  • If there are any gaps, fill them with expanding foam insulation.
  • Let the foam insulation dry and cut off any excess foam with the utility knife.
  • Install new window stops on the windows inside. They must be thick enough to conceal gaps between the new window and the current frame.
  • Seal the edges of the trim with silicone caulk.
